Finally the wind is just a gentle breeze and the sun can do some good. We decide to go see the Quartermaster Depot, below the hill where the Territorial Prison is located. The quartermaster was responsible for supplying the army with all of its needs for food, clothing, and shelter. When this depot was built, there was no railroad in Arizona and few roads to move supplies around, yet there were Army posts and outposts all over the territory and scattered around the surrounding states. These posts had to get supplies from somewhere and Yuma was that somewhere. Most of the supplies came to Yuma from San Francisco. How on earth did they get supplies from San Francisco to Yuma? And why Yuma…why not just supply every place from San Francisco? (more…)
